MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Loras College pitcher Cory Schultz (East Dubuque,
Ill./East Dubuque HS) has been named 2003 IIAC Baseball Most Valuable
Player and Wartburg College Head Coach Joel Holst has
been named 2003 IIAC Baseball Coach of the Year.
Schultz completed Conference play with a 4-1 record,
a 3.08 earned run average, two saves and a Conference-best 57 strikeouts
in nine games. He tied for the Conference-lead in victories, tied
for second in appearances and saves, and ranked third in opponents
batting average (.245), fourth in innings pitched (38.0) and fifth
in ERA. Take out a 6-5 victory over Buena Vista in which he gave
up five earned runs and 22-6 loss to Wartburg in which he gave up
six earned runs, Schultz’s ERA was 0.66 against Conference opponents.
He walked just 11 batters in 38 innings. Schultz led the Duhawks
to an 11-10 Conference record and a fourth place finish. It was
Loras’ best IIAC record and finish since 2000 when the team went
15-8 and finished second.
Overall, Schultz posted a 6-3 record with four
saves. He struck out 95 batters and walked just 16 in 69.1 innings
He allowed 38 runs, 23 earned and had a 2.99 ERA in 16 games (10
starts). Take away the Buena Vista and Wartburg games, Schultz’s
ERA for the season was 1.84.
Holst was named IIAC Coach of the Year for the
sixth time in the past seven seasons. He guided Wartburg to its
seventh straight Iowa Conference title with a 14-6 Conference record.
The Knights enter this weekend’s NCAA Regional Tournament with a
32-10-1 overall record. Holst has a record of 260-102-2 (.717 winning
percentage) in eight seasons at Wartburg and a 360-182-2 (.664)
overall record in 13 years as a collegiate head coach.
The IIAC also announced today the Baseball All-Conference
Team. The 29-member team includes 14 First Team players and 15 Second
Team players. Conference Champion Wartburg had eight players receive
All-Conference honors including five First Team selections. Cornell
and Simpson each placed four players on the All-Conference Team
including three First Team selections apiece.
