DUBUQUE, IOWA . . . The Wartburg
College women’s and the Loras College men’s track and field teams
captured the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) titles
at the IIAC meet hosted by Loras College on Friday May 13 and Saturday
May 14.
On the women’s side, Wartburg ran away from the
rest of the schools on the second day to claim its sixth straight
Iowa Conference title with 224 points. The Knights entered the day
trailing Loras, who finished second for the second straight year
with 168 points. Luther College took home third with 141 points,
followed by Central College (92). Cornell College rounded out the
top five with 63 points.
In the men’s meet Loras, the host institution,
led from the outset claiming its first conference title since 1996
with 193 points, outdistancing Central and Wartburg who tied for
second 31 points back with 162 points. Wartburg was behind Central
for a majority of the meet, but pulled even with the Dutch by beating
Central to the line for the title in the meet’s final event, the
4x400 relay. The University of Dubuque placed fourth in the men’s
race with 84 points.
Wartburg senior Missy Buttry (Shenandoah,
Iowa/Shenandoah) and junior Josh Hauser (Union,
Iowa/BCLUW) were named the women’s and men’s Most Valuable Performers.
Buttry successfully defended her conference titles in the 800 meters
(2:15.68), 1,500 meters (4:32.37), and 5,000 meters (16:17.31).
She set new stadium records in the 1,500 and 5,000. She won all
three events every year of her collegiate career. Hauser won two
individual titles, claiming first in the 200 meters (21.67) and
the 400 meters (47.91). He also placed second in the long jump (7.00m).
Both runners also earned the same honor during the indoor season.
Wartburg’s Marcus Newsom was named
the IIAC Womens’s Track and Field Coach of the year for the sixth
consecutive time after guiding the Knights to their sixth straight
title. Loras’ Robert Tucker was named the IIAC
Men’s Track and Field Coach of the year. It was the fourth time
Tucker has been named Men’s Coach of the Year, but the first time
since 1990. Tucker stepped in as the interim coach in the fall.
