ASBURY,
IOWA . . . Wartburg
College shot a final round 340 at The Meadows Golf Club on Saturday
to finish the 72-hole Championship at 1327 (318-318-351-340)
and capture its third Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(IIAC) women’s golf Championship in four years. The Knights
also earn the Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division
III Women’s Golf Championship in May. Wartburg sophomore
Stephanie Burns took home individual Medalist
honors with her third round in the 70s, an IIAC season-low 75
for 72-hole total of 311 (75-78-83-75).
Behind
Burns’ second 75 of the tournament, the Knights were able
to fire the day’s low round of 340 and hold off a charge
by host Loras College to qualify for the national meet. Wartburg
will host the national meet at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in
Waverly May 13-16. Loras shot 342 to finish 12 strokes back
at 1339 (328-324-345-342). Luther College (1381) edged defending
Conference champion Simpson College (1383) for third place.
Burns’
four-day total of 311 ranks as the second lowest 72-hole total
in Conference Championship history. She finished 13 strokes
ahead of Loras’ Stephanie Schwartz, who
was second at 78-85-78-83—324. Buena Vista University’s
Chelsea Anderson (80-84-80-88—332) took
third, two shots ahead of Simpson’s Megan Smith
(83-79-88-84—334). Smith is a two-time All-Conference
(top-10 finish) performer after placing ninth last year.
A
scorecard tie-breaker gave Luther’s Emily Looft
(81-89-83-82—335) fifth place and Wartburg’s Kate
Thompson (78-82-86-89—335) sixth place. Luther’s
Lindsay Thies (336) and Coe College’s
Angela Meisterling (337) finished seventh and
eighth, respectively, while a second scorecard tie-breaker gave
Simpson’s Katie Vaux (340) ninth place
over Loras’ Amy Kemp (340) to round out
All-Conference honors. Kemp is a three-time All-Conference (top-10
finish) performer after finishing 10th in 2005 and third in
2006.
Kemp
is the 19th three-time All-Conference performer in IIAC history,
while Smith (9th in 2006), Thompson (7th in 2005), Thies (9th
in 2005) and Vaux (4th in 2006) bring the number of all-time
two-time All-Conference performers to 38.
Ties
for second through ninth place are determined by nine-hole scores
starting from the final nine today. Ties for Medalist and tenth-place
are determined by a sudden death playoff.
For
the second time in three years, Loras head coach Denise
Udelhofen was named Iowa Conference women’s golf
Coach of the Year. She led the Duhawks to a runner-up finish,
the school’s best since 1990 when they also finished second.
Loras has posted a runner-up finish in the IIAC Championship
four times since joining the league in 1986.
Final
results from the 2007 IIAC women’s golf Championship are
here.
