CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . A pair of Iowa Conference wrestlers are among the 45 student-athletes named today to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Men's At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Men’s At-Large program for the Academic All-America® includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis and water polo.
Coe College senior Tyler Burkle (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) was named to the 17-member First Team, while Wartburg College junior Adam Weber (Waterloo, Iowa/Gilbertville Don Bosco) was tabbed for the 13-member Second Team. Three-time NCAA Division III wrestling champion Dan Laurent of Wisconsin-La Crosse was selected as the team's Academic All-America® of the Year.
Burkle is the 32nd Kohawk to be selected for the award and just the sixth first team selection. He becomes the second Kohawk to earn CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® First Team honors this season, as junior baseball player Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) also earned the award. It is the first time in school history Coe has had two players earn first team honors in the same school year.
Burkle also earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors in 2008, as he was a second team selection. He joins David Simmons as the only Coe wrestlers to earn the award. Simmons was selected to the second team in 1995.
The number one ranked wrestler entering the NCAA Championships, Burkle finished third at 184 pounds after being upset in the quarterfinals. Following his quarterfinal round loss, Burkle won four straight matches. Burkle was in search of his second National Championship, having won the 165-pound title in 2008 and placing third at the same weight the following year.
Burkle finished his career with 125 wins, the fourth most in school history. His 37 wins in 2010 were the fourth most in school history as well. Burkle ended his career on top of Coe's career major decisions list with 27.
Burkle graduated from Coe with a Business Administration degree.
Weber became the school’s 71st CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American® all-time and the 33rd since 2000.
He adds Academic All-America® honors to the Elite 88 Award he received from the NCAA for having the hightest grade-point average of any participating wrestler at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships. Weber, a business administration major, was also honored as a member of the Iowa Conference’s 2009-10 All-Academic Team.
On the mat, the 157-pounder was an Iowa Conference runner-up and finished in the top six of his weight class at the national tournament.
